Making Water Conservation Part of the Pacific Northwest Lifestyle

People in Washington State are often seen as leaders on conservation issues. We live in a spectacular part of the country and we do what we can to ensure it stays that way. Yet water conservation has not been high on our radar. This is probably not surprising since the Northwest is also known for its abundant rainfall.

The words water and abundant may not be used together much longer due to population growth, global warming and other factors. The natural beauty of our region has attracted an ever-growing population that has put increased demand on our water resources. At the same time, globing warming may mean warmer temperatures and reduced snow pack. This is a trend that seems to be our future.

The truth is the Pacific Northwest actually receives less average rainfall than seemingly sunnier climes. Out of 100 U.S. cities, Seattle ranks 56th in average rainfall at 38.6 inches. Metropolitan areas with higher annual rainfalls include Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Houston, Memphis, Miami, New York and Philadelphia.

According to the 2001 Central Puget Sound Regional Water Supply Outlook, our region is facing significant challenges in meeting the water needs for people and fish habitat with the resources currently available. The area’s population is expected to increase by 27% between 2000 and 2020. Already some utilities are predicting insufficient supplies to meet this demand. That demand may also be intensified by climatic changes and faster than anticipated growth.

As demands for our water grow, the need to conserve water also grows. Conservation is one of the easiest and most economical ways to ensure adequate supplies. We need to start developing good water conservation habits NOW, and incorporating them into the way we live, work and think about water.
